Improvising in context of Brazilian jazz

Experience improvising IN A CONTEXT, Brazilian Jazz, for example. Bring instruments on which you at least have basic proficiency. We will look at how to improvise INSIDE a style of music. Using Brazilian and other styles - possibly swing, bop, gypsy, blues, rock and roll, Greek, Arabic, free - I will bring several examples we can work on, and select what seems right for the musicians present. We will examine and experiment with using rhythm, melody, harmony and scales to shape our improvisation.

Dexter Payne started musical life at home, playing harmonica and ukulele and then in school bands on clarinet, bari and alto sax. He appeared on NBC Today Show when he was 30, and recorded in a session with Judy Roderick and Mac Rebennack (aka Dr John) 3 yrs later. He went on to travel through Latin America, playing in 10 different countries, where he recorded with samba icon Beth Carvalho and played with Ruben Gonzales and Israel ‘Cachaito” Lopez. Twice a finalist in DownBeat Readers Poll, he also played in the winning band of 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. Payne was director of Afropop Ensemble at Naropa University for 4 years, and has studied in Brazil, Turkey and Greece. After 4 albums co-produced with Grammy nominated Gaudencio Thiago de Mello, his current Dexter Payne Quintet won a 4 star rating in DownBeat Magazine for their first CD. Currently performing with the Quintet, Sherefe (Greek/Turkish//Balkan/Arabic/), Lionel Young Band (blues), Emergence Ensemble (9 piece music and movement improv), Midday Music Meditation (contemplative improv), and Marrakech Express (Moroccan composer El Yesfi Samir). He is in Taiwan playing free improv with Lin Hsiao Feng, Brazilian jazz with Peng Yuwen and Brazilian choro with Shu-Yu Bruce Peng and Ing Len Chang.
